Description
Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ (Portuguese Laurel Brenelia) is an elegant cultivar of Portuguese laurel. Its larger glossy green wavy evergreen leaves on sturdy stems, which are deep burgundy red when young. During the summer, plumes of white flowers are produced which are occasionally followed by black berries, loved by visiting winter thrushes.
Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ is generally more compact than it’s larger cousin, growing between 3-4 metres high and is happy being clipped either as a topiary specimen or as an elegant hedge.
Portuguese Laurel likes most soils including clay and unlike Common Laurel is also at home on shallow chalk. Prunus lusitanica can be planted in either sun or shade, but it dislikes wet ground.
