Description
Prunus laurocerasus Novita (Cherry or Common Laurel) is similar in habit to Prunus laurocerasus but has found to be more tolerant of cold weather.
Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’ is also called cherry laurel ‘Novita’ and is a relatively new cultivar. Similar in habit to Prunus laurocerasus but has found to be more tolerant of cold weather. Due to its dense, dark green evergreen leaves the Novita is commonly planted for screening, however it can also be used as a stand-alone tree, growing with an upright, broad habit.
Cherry laurel has fresh green leaves on foliation, which get darker and glossier with age. In May, mature trees produce a display of white blossom, which grow on upright spikes. Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’ also produces black, conical fruit, however these are poisonous, so be cautious when planting near livestock or children. The flowers are great for pollinators in the garden.
