Description
Prunus cerasifera Nigra is a deciduous ornamental purple cherry plum tree that is one of the first trees to blossom in the UK. The profuse pink flowers remain on the tree whilst the dark foliage begins to emerge, gradually fading to white and contrasting fantastically with the small blackish-purple leaves.
Also known as Prunus pissardii Nigra, the foliage show continues into late autumn with a stunning display of red and orange against almost black stems.
Unlike many of the species, it will tolerate very severe pruning, making it easy to maintain and therefore a perfect tree for small gardens.
It will tolerate most soil conditions, including clay but will thriving particularly in well-draining soils.
